Conservatory awnings are mounted flush with the glazing. They retract into a headbox and run down guides that are fixed to the glazing bars. The fabric must be held under tension and this is done by drive mechanisms and spring tensioners in the bottom rail or side guides. These blinds are almost always motorised due to their installed position.
Typically external shading is more effective at reducing heat gain than internal shading.
The components and materials used in these awning systems are similar to others detailed on this website. Most hardware is powder coated aluminium and fixings are stainless steel.
As conservatory roofs differ in design an extensive range of brackets and fixtures are available.
The motor is fully enclosed in the barrel of the awning and invariably controlled by radio controlled switches or handsets. With conservatory awnings it is recommended that a sun and wind sensor is installed to extend the awning in sunny conditions but to ensure it retracts if the wind speed exceeds safe operational limits.
Mesh (screen) fabrics are often preferred as they allow outward vision and still achieve a high level of shading and heat rejection. Acrylic awning fabrics will provide a more decorative effect.
Both fabric types are designed to be held under constant tension required by this system.
