Conservatory Awnings

If you have a sloping "lean to" roof on your conservatory then a conservatory awning might just be what you need to help keep your conservatory cool.

Conservatory awnings are mounted parallel to the roof of the conservatory and retract neatly into a headbox fitted to the wall of the house when not needed. The main fixing is to the wall but support brackets are fitted onto the glazing bars of the conservatory roof and as there are so many different roof types you will be surprised by the vast array of brackets available.

The fabric is held under tension by a spring system in the bottom rail and/or side channels of the awning so it is always held above the glazing.

As the awning is fitted above the roof electrical operation is a must. The motor is fully concealed in the awnings barrel and invariably controlled by radio controlled switches or handsets. It is recommended that a sun and wind sensor is installed to extend the awning in sunny conditions but to ensure it retracts if the wind speed exceeds safe operational limits.

The choice of fabrics is important and often mesh (screen) fabrics are chosen as they still allow a view to the outside but acrylic fabrics are also available.

Fitting awnings in this position is a skilled job and access is often quite a challenge so always make sure you use a BBSA member – just use the “Find a Supplier” button opposite.

Typically external shading is more effective at reducing the summer heat than internal shading.
