External roller blinds or screens provide a high degree of protection against solar heat and glare in the summer months but can also be used an insulating barrier to retain heat in the winter too.
External roller blinds usually have the roller barrel and fabric contained in a neat headbox so when the blind is not required the fabric is protected. To keep the blind from moving in the wind side channels, solid guide rods or stainless steel guide wires will run down the sides of the blind.
The fabric range on external rollers is extensive from open mesh screen fabrics which help to maintain an external view though to more densely woven acrylic fabrics used on traditional awnings.
Operation of this type of blind can be via a gearbox mounted on one side of the awning which is operated by a detachable handle or by an electric motor. With motorisation it is possible to have a variety of controls including radio controlled switches or automatic control using sun and wind sensors. In the latter example the blind will extend when the light level reaches a pre-set limit but will also retract should the wind speed exceed the safe operational limits of the system.
