A true blackout blind usually consists of a roller blind using a blackout fabric with a head box to cover the fabric roll and side and bottom channels to help prevent light from entering around the extremities of the blind. These blinds can either be fitted into a window reveal or external to the reveal, the latter fixing method typically achieving a more light-tight seal.
Often in domestic situations this degree of light exclusion is not necessarily required so a standard blind using a blackout fabric may be an appropriate option. Some venetian blinds are designed to provide a high level of light exclusion by not having cord holes in the slats of the blind.
Blackout fabrics are available in a variety of colours and finishes and not just black! This makes them an ideal option for bedrooms or where a high degree of light exclusion is required such as for use with home cinema equipment.
The operation of the blind will depend on the blind style but both manual and motorised options are available on most blind styles. With motorised operation it is possible to link to home cinema equipment.
See information on window blind safety here.
Blackout blinds are also known as; Black-out blinds, dim-out Blinds, AV Blinds
