Energy saving blinds in homes are typically used to retain heat in the winter by preventing the heat in the room from going out through the glazing.
The energy saving performance of blinds depends on a number of factors including the type of fabric, where the blind is fitted and what type of glazing is being used. Research undertaken at Glasgow Caledonian University for English Heritage showed that a roller blind fitted to a single glazed window could reduce heat loss by 40%, the same amount as a pair of curtains.
The BBSA has a long-term project, Shade Specifier, to show the energy saving benefits of window blinds in homes and you can see more here.
Of course blinds can also be used to reduce the heat coming into a home in the summer so reducing the need to install or run domestic conditioning systems so saving energy.
See information on window blind safety here.
Energy saving blinds are also known as heat saving blinds, heat reflecting blinds, heat retaining blinds.
