The most popular form of insect screen is a roller blind type system which has a fine mesh screen applied and this then runs in side channels either side of the screen and a flush fitting bottom rail, so when it is fully closed there is a complete coverage. The screen is then out of sight and protected when not in use so preserving your view.
Insect screens are used extensively in commercial buildings especially where there is food preparation but are increasingly used in homes as well.
Insect screens can also be fitted to doors and patio doors and have the advantage of providing ventilation whilst keeping out unwanted flying insects.
The mesh materials tend to be made of fibreglass, come in a range of colours and grades and can be washed in soapy water.
One of the new uses of fly screens is for folding door systems, which allows homeowners to open up the back of the house in the evenings whilst using lights without being invaded by moths and Daddy longlegs.
Most insect screens are manually operated but electric operation is also possible.
See information on window blind safety here.
Insect screens are also known as Fly screens, Flyscreens, Mosquito screens.
