Soft blinds, especially Roman blinds are becoming a popular form of window blind. In a Roman blind the fabric has a rod inserted at the back of the fabric so when the blind is raised the blind retracts into panels or folds, one in front of the other. When the blind is fully lowered the fabric hangs straight. With Roman blinds it is possible to have a lining and these can be black-out.
Typically these blind styles are operated by a continuous chain to the side of the blind or by a cord and a cordlock. Using either method it is possible to stop the blind at any position.
Roman blind can also be operated using 240V AC or 24V DC motors linked to switches or remote controls.
A Festoon Blind has the material gathered in the width and the drop. This creates a series of permanent swags, whether it is raised or lowered.
An Austrian blind has fullness in the width, with swags at the bottom of the material.
There is an extensive range of fabrics available for these soft blinds and some BBSA members even offer a service to make up soft blinds using fabric you supply.
See information on window blind safety here.
Soft blinds are also known as; Roman Blinds, Austrian Blinds, Festoon Blinds, Roll-up Blinds, Soft Furnishings.
